An 84-year-old woman in western Poland has escaped serious injury after part of her bedroom ceiling collapsed directly onto her bed while she was sleeping. Two police officers rushed to the scene and pulled her from beneath the rubble before emergency services took her to hospital.

The incident happened at approximately 1.30am on Wednesday, 4 November, in Przyczyna Dolna, a village near Wschowa in Poland’s western Lubusz province.

The woman was asleep when part of the ceiling gave way, sending wooden beams, plaster and other building materials crashing onto her bed.

According to an official account published by Wschowa police, the woman was still lying beneath the fallen debris when officers arrived at the property.

Officers find woman trapped beneath rubble

Sergeant Szymon Szachniewicz and Sergeant Roland Walenciak, both serving with the Wschowa District Police Headquarters, were dispatched after an emergency call reporting that someone had become trapped following a partial structural collapse.

When the officers entered the home, dust was still hanging in the air.

They discovered that part of the ceiling had fallen into a bedroom, leaving the elderly resident trapped beneath wooden boards and rubble.

The officers immediately began helping her out of the wreckage.

After freeing the woman, they carried her to a safer location, provided first aid and stayed with her until paramedics arrived.

Emergency medical personnel subsequently transported her to hospital for examination.

Despite the fallen materials and the circumstances of the collapse, doctors found that she had suffered only superficial injuries. Police confirmed that her life and health were not in danger.

Her bed may have prevented more serious injuries

Further details emerged in local reporting by Radio ESKA, which identified the woman as Maria and described how the metal framework of her rehabilitation bed may have helped protect her.

The bed was equipped with an overhead support structure that reportedly absorbed or blocked some of the falling debris.

Although the precise extent of that protection has not been independently established, the structure may help explain why the woman escaped with relatively minor injuries.

Neighbours expressed relief at her survival, with local residents describing the outcome as remarkable.

Building inspector restricts use of damaged home

The collapse happened in a house undergoing renovation, according to additional reporting by Radio ESKA Leszno.

Five other family members were reportedly inside the building at the time.

A building inspector attended the property following the incident and ordered the upper section of the house, where the collapse occurred, to be taken out of use.

The precise cause of the structural failure has not been publicly established. There is no confirmed finding that the renovation work caused the ceiling to collapse.

For the two police officers involved, the emergency was an unexpected call requiring immediate assistance rather than a conventional law-enforcement intervention.

Wschowa police subsequently highlighted the rescue as an example of officers helping people in dangerous situations beyond their usual responsibilities.

For the 84-year-old woman, the incident ended with a fortunate outcome: despite being trapped beneath debris in her own bed, she survived without serious injuries.
