A senior Polish Foreign Ministry official responsible for diplomatic security is in critical condition in a Slovenian hospital after falling from the third floor of a building connected with Poland’s diplomatic mission in Ljubljana.
Slovenian police have now confirmed that the incident occurred at around 3am last Sunday at a foreign diplomatic mission in the Slovenian capital.
The injured man is a Polish citizen and the head of the Diplomatic Security Bureau at Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the unit responsible for coordinating security at ministry buildings and Polish diplomatic missions abroad.

According to Slovenian police, the man fell from a third-floor window for reasons that are not yet known and suffered serious injuries.
“His life is in danger,” police said in information reported by Slovenian broadcaster N1.
Slovenian police unable to examine scene inside mission
The investigation is complicated by the diplomatic status of the premises.
Slovenian police said they were not permitted to enter the diplomatic mission to conduct a scene examination or other investigative procedures.
Under Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the premises of a diplomatic mission are inviolable and authorities of the receiving country may not enter them without the consent of the head of mission.
Police said the Polish mission informed them that its own competent investigators would carry out procedural measures, including an examination of the scene and investigation of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Slovenian officers will pass the information they have gathered to the competent state prosecutor.
The development means important questions about how the fall occurred remain unanswered.
Polish Foreign Ministry confirms accident
Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór confirmed the incident to Polish news site Niezależna.pl.
“He was on leave, it was his private time. He was in an apartment adjoining the mission. That is where the accident happened,” Wewiór said.
The ministry has not publicly identified the injured official.
Initial Polish reports said he had been in critical condition in a Slovenian hospital for several days before news of the incident became public.
The fall reportedly occurred at night from premises associated with the Polish diplomatic compound.
Questions over diplomatic consignment
A separate issue has emerged over why the official was in Ljubljana.
Although the Foreign Ministry says he was formally on private leave, Niezależna.pl reported, citing its own sources, that the official had collected documentation connected with a diplomatic consignment and was expected to pass it on.
The outlet further reported that he did not have a formally issued business-trip order for that task.
Those claims have not been independently confirmed by the Polish Foreign Ministry.
Slovenian newspaper Delo also reported the allegation but noted that the ministry had not confirmed a connection between the diplomatic consignment and the official’s presence in Slovenia.
At this stage there is no evidence publicly establishing that the fall was connected with his official duties.
Reports of gathering at premises
Slovenian N1 subsequently reported another unconfirmed element of the case.
Citing Polish outlet Zero.pl and an unnamed diplomatic source, it said several people had reportedly been present at a private gathering in the room from which the official fell.
According to that account, those present were there in their private time and the Foreign Ministry official was the only person injured.
Neither Slovenian police nor Poland’s Foreign Ministry has publicly confirmed that account.
Given the absence of an official reconstruction of events, the circumstances of the fall remain uncertain.
Official responsible for security of Polish missions
The position held by the injured man makes the incident particularly sensitive for Poland’s diplomatic service.
The Diplomatic Security Bureau coordinates and supervises measures intended to ensure the secure operation of the Foreign Ministry’s domestic facilities and Poland’s network of embassies and other diplomatic missions abroad.
Poland’s mission in Slovenia is currently headed by Leszek Soczewica, who took over as chargé d’affaires in February 2026.
Soczewica is a former senior military officer and diplomat. He previously served as a senior official at the Polish Foreign Ministry and as Poland’s ambassador to Slovakia.
The most significant new information from Slovenian authorities is that the incident is now confirmed to have happened at a diplomatic mission, the official’s injuries remain life-threatening, and local police were unable to carry out a conventional examination inside the protected premises.
How the official came to fall from the window — and whether his presence in Ljubljana had any connection with official diplomatic business — remains under investigation.
