Poland’s security services have launched a coordinated response after police received information about a possible attack targeting Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, the country’s defence minister. Senior government officials ordered immediate action on Sunday, 11 October, with representatives of the police, intelligence services and the agency responsible for protecting senior officials called to an emergency security meeting.

The information was confirmed by Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for Poland’s minister responsible for coordinating the intelligence services, and Karolina Gałecka, spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry.

Authorities have not disclosed the source of the warning, the nature of the alleged threat or whether they have found evidence of a concrete attack plan.

Emergency meeting of Poland’s security services

The response was ordered by Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Tomasz Siemoniak, the minister responsible for coordinating Poland’s intelligence and security services.

In a public statement on X, Gałecka said police had received information concerning a possible attack on Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz, prompting the two ministers to order action.

A meeting involving the relevant security agencies was scheduled for 11am on Sunday at the Counter-Terrorism Centre of Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW).

Representatives of three organisations were called to participate: the national police, the State Protection Service (SOP) and the Internal Security Agency.

The meeting was intended to coordinate the authorities’ response and assess the information received by police.

Dobrzyński separately confirmed the arrangements. According to reporting carried by Polish news agency PAP, he declined to disclose further details, saying journalists would be informed if a subsequent press briefing was arranged.

What is known about the reported threat?

The authorities’ announcement establishes that police received a warning concerning a possible attack on two of Poland’s most senior government figures.

It does not establish that an assassination attempt was underway, that an organised plot had been confirmed or that anyone had been identified as preparing an attack.

No details have been publicly confirmed concerning possible suspects, motives, weapons or a location.

There has also been no confirmed announcement of arrests or criminal charges directly connected to the report.

The distinction is important: security agencies may act on information concerning a potential threat before its credibility has been established.

As Defence24 reported following the official announcement, authorities had not disclosed the evidence underlying the warning or confirmed the existence of an immediate danger.

Who is responsible for protecting Poland’s leaders?

The involvement of several agencies reflects their different responsibilities within Poland’s security system.

The Internal Security Agency, known by its Polish initials ABW, is responsible for domestic intelligence and counter-intelligence, including identifying and countering terrorist threats.

Its Counter-Terrorism Centre coordinates information-sharing between the institutions involved in protecting Poland against terrorism.

According to the Interior Ministry’s description of the centre, it operates around the clock and brings together representatives of multiple security organisations.

The State Protection Service, or SOP, provides close protection for senior state officials, including the president, prime minister and deputy prime ministers.

Its responsibilities also include identifying and preventing threats to protected individuals, as outlined in the service’s official description of its duties.

Kosiniak-Kamysz serves as both defence minister and deputy prime minister, making him one of the country’s highest-ranking government officials.

Separate security meeting held earlier on Sunday

The reported threat emerged during a period of heightened security activity in Poland following several violent incidents involving schools.

Earlier on Sunday, Tusk attended a separate government meeting with ministers and security officials concerning recent attacks in educational institutions and the spread of threatening material and misinformation online.

The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the earlier meeting was scheduled for 8.30am at the government headquarters in Warsaw.

The two meetings addressed different reported security concerns. Authorities have not established a connection between the threats involving schools and the information concerning a possible attack on Tusk and Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Authorities assessing the warning

The immediate focus of Poland’s security services is to establish the credibility of the information received by police and determine whether further protective or investigative action is necessary.

The government’s announcement confirms that the warning has prompted a coordinated response at senior ministerial level.

However, it remains unclear whether officials have identified a specific threat, whether protective arrangements have been changed or whether the report will result in a formal criminal investigation.

Further information may emerge following the security agencies’ discussions.

For now, authorities have confirmed a warning about a possible attack on Poland’s prime minister and defence minister — not a verified assassination plot.
