Poland has secured its fourth consecutive victory in the European Tree of the Year competition, with “The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills” taking the top spot. The announcement was made at a ceremony held at the European Parliament in Brussels, where the winning tree was recognized for its cultural significance and community impact.

The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills, located in Poland, garnered an impressive almost 150,000 online votes, significantly outpacing its European competitors. A majestic fig tree in Portugal came in second with 43,000 votes, while a 400-year-old stone pine in Spain secured third place with 37,000 votes. Fifteen trees from across Europe competed for the prestigious title this year.

The winning tree stands 30 meters tall and boasts a trunk circumference of 4.5 meters. Its name is derived from its central location in the Dalkowskie Hills and the symbolic red color of its leaves, reminiscent of the heart. This tree serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting concerts, workshops, book readings, and religious services. According to local legend, dropping peanuts into a hole in the tree is believed to make wishes come true.

Poland’s dominance in the competition began in 2022 when a 400-year-old oak from Przybudki in the northeastern Białowieża Forest took the title. In 2023, an 180-year-old common oak nicknamed “Fabrykant” from Łódź won. Last year, a 200-year-old beech known as “The Heart of the Garden” in Wojsławice, southwestern Poland, claimed the award.

The European Tree of the Year competition highlights the cultural and environmental significance of trees across the continent. By celebrating these natural landmarks, the contest aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving Europe’s rich arboreal heritage.

Poland’s consistent success in the competition underscores the country’s deep appreciation for its natural and cultural treasures. The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills not only represents Poland’s natural beauty but also serves as a symbol of community and tradition.

As the European Tree of the Year, The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills will continue to inspire efforts to protect and celebrate Europe’s most iconic trees. The ceremony at the European Parliament marked a moment of pride for Poland and a celebration of the enduring role trees play in European culture and identity.

In the coming year, the competition is expected to continue its tradition of highlighting the unique stories and histories behind Europe’s most beloved trees. With Poland’s fourth consecutive win, the country solidifies its position as a leader in recognizing and preserving its arboreal heritage.

The European Tree of the Year competition is an annual event that brings together communities from across Europe to celebrate the continent’s most remarkable trees. By engaging the public in the voting process, the contest fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility for these natural treasures.

As Poland celebrates its latest victory, the country looks forward to continuing its legacy of tree preservation and community engagement. The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills will remain a cherished landmark, not only for its natural beauty but also for the cultural and social significance it holds for the local community.

In conclusion, Poland’s fourth consecutive win in the European Tree of the Year competition is a testament to the country’s commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage. The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills stands as a symbol of community spirit and environmental stewardship, inspiring future generations to appreciate and protect Europe’s most iconic trees.
