The Gdańsk Christmas Market has been officially named the best in Europe, claiming the top spot in the prestigious “Best Christmas Markets in Europe 2025” competition. This marks a historic achievement for the city and Poland, as the market garnered a record-breaking 92,283 votes, surpassing Budapest’s previous record by a remarkable 35%.

The annual event, hosted in the heart of Gdańsk, triumphed after several years of climbing the ranks. In 2020, it secured third place, followed by a second-place finish in 2022. This year’s win underscores its growing appeal, with participants praising its magical atmosphere, rich cultural offerings, and vibrant festive displays.

A Celebration for All

Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, the mayor of Gdańsk, celebrated the achievement, highlighting the community’s role in creating the market’s enchanting environment. “We’ve done it! Our Gdańsk Christmas Market is now the best in Europe. Thank you for every vote and for contributing to this magical atmosphere. This victory is ours to share,” she said.

As part of the celebration, the city has organized a special event on December 3 at Targ Węglowy, the market’s central hub. The evening will feature various performances, including a display of extreme acrobatics, set to captivate audiences.

The festive atmosphere extends beyond the market, with Christmas trees lighting up 15 districts across the city. The centerpiece is a towering tree on Długi Targ, surrounded by dazzling illuminations that transform Gdańsk into a winter wonderland.

A Hub of Festive Cheer

Operating from November 22 to December 23, the Gdańsk Christmas Market draws around 800,000 visitors annually. This year, nearly 200 vendors are showcasing an eclectic mix of local and international culinary delights, artisanal crafts, and unique souvenirs. Popular features include artistic performances, theatrical shows, and family-friendly activities, making it a destination for all ages.

Spanning multiple iconic locations such as Targ Węglowy, Bogusławskiego, Tkacka streets, and the historic Artus Court, the market integrates Gdańsk’s heritage into its festive offerings. Visitors can explore stalls offering handcrafted gifts, sample traditional Polish treats, and enjoy holiday-themed entertainment.

A Landmark Win for Gdańsk and Poland

This victory not only boosts Gdańsk’s reputation as a must-visit European destination but also sets a new benchmark for Christmas markets across the continent. As the festive season unfolds, the city’s recognition stands as a testament to its charm and the collective effort of its community and organizers.

The market’s organizers encourage visitors to immerse themselves in the experience, emphasizing the importance of connection and celebration during the holiday season. With the distinction of being Europe’s best, the Gdańsk Christmas Market is poised to attract even more global attention in the years to come.

Last year, yet another Polish town, Kraków, was hailed as the home of the best Christmas market in Europe, adding another feather to Poland’s cap. This achievement followed closely on the heels of this year’s victory for Gdańsk, marking a continuous string of successes for Poland in this festive tradition.
