Rafał Trzaskowski, the Mayor of Warsaw, has officially been selected as the Civic Coalition (Koalicja Obywatelska, KO) candidate for Poland’s 2025 presidential election. Securing a decisive victory in the coalition’s primary, Trzaskowski received 74.75% of the vote, defeating his opponent, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, who garnered 25.25%.

Following the announcement, Trzaskowski expressed confidence in his strong mandate and readiness to lead a vigorous campaign against the ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS). “I have energy, determination, and courage to win against PiS,” he declared, emphasizing his commitment to mobilizing the electorate.

Democratic Process Highlights KO’s Strengths

Unlike PiS, where major decisions are often centralized, KO opted for a democratic primary process, engaging over 22,000 voters. Trzaskowski lauded this participatory approach, contrasting it with PiS’s more authoritarian decision-making style. “In PiS, one voice decides. In KO, every vote matters,” he remarked.

Trzaskowski also highlighted the camaraderie and mutual respect between himself and Sikorski during the primaries. He acknowledged Sikorski’s resilience, stating, “Our candidate needs to be tough and battle-tested. The primaries helped us prepare for the challenges ahead.”

A Broader Battle for Democracy

Trzaskowski’s campaign is poised to tackle key national issues, with a focus on defending democratic values and addressing security concerns. Referring to insights from Anne Applebaum’s book The Twilight of Democracy, Trzaskowski warned of growing global threats to democratic systems. “All enemies of Western democracy are cooperating to jeopardize our freedoms,” he said.

The KO leader stressed the importance of uniting Poland and awakening public engagement to challenge PiS’s dominance. “We’re building momentum and coming out of this stronger as a coalition,” he asserted.

Path to the Presidency

With presidential elections scheduled for May 2025 and campaigns officially beginning in January, Trzaskowski joins a crowded field. Other announced candidates include Szymon Hołownia of Poland 2050, Sławomir Mentzen of the Confederation, and Marek Jakubiak from the Free Republicans. PiS is expected to unveil its candidate, likely Karol Nawrocki, soon.

The Civic Coalition (KO) achieved a significant victory in the parliamentary elections last October, ending eight years of rule by the Law and Justice Party (PiS). This win marks a pivotal shift in Polish politics, as PiS’s tenure was characterized by controversial judicial reforms, strained relations with the European Union, and polarizing domestic policies. KO’s success signals a public demand for change, promising a return to more democratic governance, improved EU relations, and a focus on unity after years of political division.

As KO rallies behind Trzaskowski, the stakes for the upcoming elections remain high, with the future of Poland’s democracy hanging in the balance.
