Szymon Marciniak, a name synonymous with excellence in football refereeing, has once again been honored with a prestigious accolade. This time, he has been named the best football referee in the world for the year 2023 by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).
Marciniak, who had previously garnered recognition in the same category in the preceding year, has reaffirmed his elite status in the international football arena. The formal award ceremony took place during a UEFA meeting in Geneva in August.
The success of the Polish referee is hardly a surprise, considering his recent achievements. In the previous year, Marciniak officiated the World Cup final in Qatar. His remarkable journey continued in 2023, where he was the referee for both the Champions League final and the Club World Cup.
In the 2023 IFFHS rankings, Marciniak significantly outpaced his competitors, such as Italy’s Daniele Orsato and France’s Clement Turpin. Notably, only one referee from outside Europe made it to the top ten – Wilmar Roldan from Colombia, who secured the eighth position.
