The amber ‘loaf’ unearthed in a Kozłówka field in 1870

In the spring of 1870, someone ploughing a field on the Kozłówka estate near Lubartów turned up something extraordinary.

It was a lump of amber described as being the size of a fairly large loaf of bread.

The discovery sounds almost like local folklore, especially in a country where amber is usually associated with Baltic beaches and Gdańsk. But the Kozłówka story entered the written record almost immediately and was later preserved in a major 19th-century agricultural encyclopaedia.

There was, however, a frustrating ending.

According to the historical account, the farmer who found the amber did not realise what he had uncovered and broke it into pieces.

The original specimen has not survived.

More than 150 years later, that lost “amber loaf” has become the starting point for a new exhibition at the Zamoyski Museum in Kozłówka — and for a wider story about an unexpected amber landscape far from Poland’s coast.

A discovery recorded in the 19th century

The best-known written account appeared in the first volume of Encyklopedia rolnictwa i wiadomości związek z nim mających, published in Warsaw in 1873.

In an entry on amber, Antoni Zagrzejewski — writing under the name Kurp — recorded that the specimen had been found on the estate of Count Jan Zamoyski at Kozłówka during spring ploughing in 1870.

He described it as comparable in size to a substantial loaf of bread and added that the man who found it, not knowing what it was, broke it apart.

The story was not created three years after the event.

Contemporary newspaper reports from June 1870 were already carrying essentially the same account of a large amber lump found during ploughing at Kozłówka. That gives the episode an unusually strong documentary trail for what might otherwise sound like a colourful rural anecdote.

What cannot be recovered is the object itself.

There is no surviving specimen that can now be weighed, measured or subjected to modern geological analysis. “Loaf-sized” therefore remains a historical description rather than a scientifically verified measurement.

Yet the basic idea of substantial amber occurring around Lubartów is no longer surprising to geologists.

Poland’s amber does not end at the Baltic

Gdańsk’s connection with amber is so strong that the material can seem almost exclusively coastal.

Polish geology tells a broader story.

The Polish Geological Institute identifies two major areas of amber occurrence in the country: the eastern Baltic coastal zone and deeper geological formations in the Pomorskie and Lubelskie regions.

In northern Lubelskie, amber-bearing layers occur within sediments connected with the southern part of the ancient Eocene sea system, known as the Parczew delta.

Around Górka Lubartowska, those layers contain grains, fragments and larger pieces of amber in silty and sandy Upper Eocene deposits.

And this is not merely a historical geological curiosity.

The institute’s latest resource data show that amber was still being extracted in 2025 from the Górka Lubartowska-Niedźwiada and Niedźwiada III deposits.

Modern scientific work has also examined amber taken directly from mining excavations in the area, studying its physical, chemical and mineralogical properties.

That research provides the geological context that the farmer in Kozłówka could never have known in 1870: his field lay in a region with a genuine and significant amber history beneath the surface.

The missing specimen returns as an idea

The lost discovery is now at the centre of Piękno zaklęte w bursztynie. Bursztynowe dożynki w Kozłówce — Beauty Captured in Amber: The Amber Harvest in Kozłówka — at the Zamoyski Museum.

Running from 22 September to 30 November 2026, the exhibition brings together natural specimens of Lublin amber with painting, digital art, animation and religious art.

One object carries particular significance.

The museum is displaying a modern piece of amber extracted near Niedźwiada whose form evokes the long-lost Kozłówka specimen.

It is not the amber found in 1870, and should never be presented as such.

Instead, it offers visitors something the original story can no longer provide: a physical sense of what a substantial piece of inland Lublin amber can look like.

The exhibition was conceived by geologist Lucjan Gazda and artist Krystyna Rudzka-Przychoda, whose paintings form its central artistic element. Works by Joanna Polak, Agnieszka Sulimierska and Mikołaj Soboliwski expand the subject through animation, digital graphics and an icon of St Barbara.

The result connects geology with memory.

A specimen found by chance behind a plough more than a century and a half ago was broken up and lost.

But the place where it was found turned out to be part of a much larger geological story — one that scientists are still studying and miners are still uncovering today.

The amber “loaf” itself may have vanished.

The landscape that produced it has not.
