A team of surgeons from St. Adalbert Hospital in Gdańsk has performed a remarkable medical procedure, removing a 14-kilogram kidney tumor from a 66-year-old patient. The operation, described as one of the most challenging in recent years, was a success, and the patient is now recovering.

The tumor, weighing as much as a small child, was discovered during medical examinations after the patient reported persistent abdominal discomfort and increasing fatigue. Despite its size, the tumor had grown gradually over time, making its presence less noticeable until it reached a critical stage.
Doctors from the hospital’s Department of Urology and Oncological Urology took on the challenge of removing the massive growth. Given its size and the potential risks involved, the procedure required meticulous planning and a highly skilled surgical team.
“This was an extremely rare case,” said one of the lead surgeons. “We knew that operating on such a large mass carried significant risks, but leaving it untreated was not an option. The patient’s condition was deteriorating, and immediate action was necessary.”
A High-Risk Surgery
The operation itself was complex and required precise coordination between multiple medical teams. Due to the tumor’s location and size, the surgeons had to navigate carefully around vital organs to prevent excessive blood loss and complications.
In cases like this, one of the main concerns is the tumor’s potential to compress nearby organs and blood vessels, leading to further complications. Additionally, there was a risk that the mass could have spread cancerous cells, which would require further oncological treatment.
“The sheer weight of the tumor posed a challenge not only in terms of removal but also in ensuring the patient’s stability during and after surgery,” explained another doctor involved in the procedure.
Successful Outcome and Patient Recovery
Despite the high risks, the surgery was completed without major complications. The medical team successfully removed the entire tumor, ensuring that no remnants were left behind. Post-operative tests will determine whether the mass was benign or malignant, influencing the next steps in the patient’s treatment.
The patient is now in stable condition and undergoing recovery. Doctors are closely monitoring his progress, but initial signs indicate that he is responding well. He is expected to regain strength over the coming weeks.
“This surgery was life-changing for the patient,” a hospital representative stated. “Had the tumor continued to grow, it could have led to organ failure or other severe health complications. Thankfully, we were able to intervene in time.”
A Rare but Significant Medical Case
Cases of kidney tumors reaching such an extreme size are exceptionally rare. In most situations, kidney tumors are detected earlier, either through routine check-ups or when patients experience symptoms such as pain or changes in urinary function. However, in this case, the tumor remained undiagnosed for an extended period, likely due to its slow growth and the patient’s body adapting to the gradual changes.
The case has sparked discussions in the medical community about the importance of regular medical screenings, particularly for older adults who may not always notice early symptoms of serious conditions.
“This serves as a reminder of how important preventive healthcare is,” said a medical expert. “Regular check-ups and imaging scans can detect abnormalities before they become life-threatening.”
As the patient continues his recovery, the medical team in Gdańsk remains hopeful that he will make a full return to normal life. Meanwhile, specialists are studying the removed tumor to gain further insights into its nature and potential implications for future treatment strategies.
