NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, visiting Warsaw on Wednesday, issued a stern warning to potential aggressors, emphasizing that any attack on Poland would be met with a “devastating” response from the alliance. Rutte’s remarks were seen as a direct message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, amid ongoing peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Rutte met with key Polish officials, including Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Andrzej Duda, Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. The discussions centered on Poland’s security and the broader European security landscape, particularly in light of Russia’s military activities.
“We will respond with full force if anyone makes the mistake of thinking they can attack Poland without consequences,” Rutte said. “Our response will be devastating. This must be clear to Mr. Vladimir Putin and anyone else who might consider attacking us.”
Tusk underscored the importance of Poland’s security, noting that the situation in Ukraine directly impacts both Poland and Europe. He emphasized the need for NATO to be prepared for scenarios beyond its control, given the limited influence on ongoing negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
“NATO must be united and believe in the principle of ‘one for all, all for one,'” Tusk said. “Especially in these turbulent times, declarations of support are crucial.”
Ruttepraised Poland as a highly valued ally, highlighting its commitment to defense spending and military support. Poland plans to allocate 4.6% of its GDP to defense, a level that Stoltenberg commended as a model for other NATO members.
