Poland activated Article 4 of the NATO Treaty on Wednesday as it raised its military to the highest state of readiness following a series of Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace. The move marked an escalation in regional security concerns and prompted urgent consultations among NATO allies.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency cabinet meeting in Warsaw hours after Polish armed forces shot down multiple Russian drones that entered the country’s territory. The airspace violations triggered immediate action at the highest levels of government as leaders coordinated with military and emergency services to assess the threat and prepare a response.

Tusk, speaking alongside top military officials, hailed the armed forces’ response as “a success for Polish and NATO forces” and emphasized that the incident had “changed the political situation” facing Poland and its allies. “In this regard, allied consultations have taken the form of a formal request to activate Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty,” Tusk said, noting that his decision followed discussion with President Karol Nawrocki.

Article 4 of the NATO Treaty allows member states to call for consultations “whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence, or security of any of the Parties is threatened.” Wednesday’s decision marks a rare and significant invocation of the alliance’s collective security procedures.

Polish authorities reported that the armed forces had downed several drones over national territory, with local police confirming that debris believed to be from a damaged drone was discovered in the village of Czosnówka, close to the Belarusian border. In response to the heightened military alert, major airports serving Warsaw, Rzeszów, and Lublin temporarily suspended flight operations, though the capital’s main Chopin Airport remained open.

Tusk informed Poland’s parliament that he had spoken with leaders from Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the Baltic states—countries he said recognize “the Russian threat clearly.” He also discussed the incursion with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte as part of coordinated alliance efforts.

For the first time, NATO-owned aircraft engaged potential threats directly in allied airspace, with the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe confirming its assets participated in repelling the unauthorized drones. “NATO responded quickly and decisively to the situation, demonstrating our capability and resolve to defend allied territory,” the alliance said in a statement, pledging continued close coordination with Poland and other member states.

The swift escalation underscores the tense security environment in Eastern Europe amid ongoing Russian military activities near NATO’s border. Polish officials indicated that this is an evolving situation, with further updates expected as investigations continue and security consultations proceed.
