Warsaw has received a major international endorsement from BBC Travel, which has selected the Polish capital as one of five fast-rising cities worth exploring in 2026.

The British broadcaster’s travel publication highlights Warsaw’s remarkable transformation, its modern infrastructure, improving quality of life and growing appeal to international visitors.

In an article examining cities whose development is changing the experience of living in and visiting them, the BBC chose Warsaw alongside Toulouse in France, Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Medellín in Colombia and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The selection is particularly notable because Warsaw is being recognised not simply as a city with an extraordinary history, but as a modern European capital that is increasingly attracting attention for what it offers today.

A city transformed beyond recognition

One of the central themes of the BBC feature is the scale of Warsaw’s transformation over the past two decades.

The article introduces Konrad Warzecha, a Polish-Australian whose family home is in Warsaw’s Wola district.

Having watched the capital develop over many years, Warzecha describes how new roads, modern infrastructure and skyscrapers have fundamentally changed its appearance.

From his family’s balcony, he has seen the skyline evolve as Warsaw has grown into a major European business and cultural centre.

He also draws attention to changes in everyday life.

Recalling experiences on public transport during his childhood, Warzecha contrasts his earlier concerns about street crime with his present-day perception of a cleaner, safer and more welcoming city.

These are his personal experiences rather than independently measured changes in crime, but they provide the human perspective at the centre of the BBC’s account.

The article also draws on Oxford Economics’ 2026 Global Cities Index, which identifies Warsaw among emerging urban centres attracting attention for their rapid development.

Its quality-of-life assessment places Warsaw ahead of several famous international capitals in that particular measure, while analysts forecast continued economic growth.

However, the BBC’s travel feature goes beyond economic statistics to examine why the city is increasingly interesting to experience firsthand.

From skyscrapers to the rebuilt Old Town

A particularly distinctive aspect of Warsaw is the contrast between its modern skyline and its historic streets.

At the centre of the city stands the Palace of Culture and Science, the monumental building completed in 1955 during the communist era.

It is now surrounded by contemporary office towers, hotels and residential developments that have dramatically altered the capital’s appearance.

Yet a short distance away, visitors can explore an entirely different architectural landscape.

Warsaw’s Old Town, with its colourful historic façades, cobbled streets and Royal Castle, represents one of Europe’s most remarkable post-war reconstruction projects.

Much of the area was destroyed by Nazi German forces during the Second World War.

According to UNESCO’s account of Warsaw’s historic centre, more than 85% of the district was destroyed in 1944.

After the war, Polish architects, conservationists and residents undertook an extensive reconstruction effort, rebuilding streets, churches, townhouses and public squares.

The achievement was recognised in 1980 when UNESCO added Warsaw’s Historic Centre to its World Heritage List.

Today, the juxtaposition of reconstructed historic architecture and contemporary skyscrapers gives the city a character that distinguishes it from many other European capitals.

BBC highlights the everyday pleasures of visiting Warsaw

The BBC feature also explores what visitors can experience beyond the city’s major landmarks.

For someone visiting Warsaw for the first time, Warzecha recommends a route that begins at the Palace of Culture and Science, continues along Nowy Świat and leads towards the Old Town.

The walk takes visitors through different periods of the city’s history while offering an introduction to its shops, cafés, restaurants and public spaces.

Traditional Polish food is another attraction.

The BBC highlights pączki, the familiar Polish filled doughnuts, alongside the country’s distinctive bary mleczne, or milk bars.

These traditional, often inexpensive restaurants serve home-style Polish meals and remain an important part of everyday food culture.

For international visitors accustomed to seeing Warsaw primarily as a business or historical destination, such experiences offer a more personal introduction to the city.

Warzecha, who once considered leaving Poland for Australia, now describes Warsaw as one of the destinations he most enthusiastically recommends.

His change of perspective reflects the wider theme of the BBC feature: cities whose development has transformed both their appearance and their appeal.

Warsaw gaining recognition as a destination in its own right

The BBC’s selection forms part of a broader assessment of 28 emerging cities identified by Oxford Economics as places worth watching.

From that wider group, BBC Travel chose five to explore through the experiences of people familiar with them.

It is an editorial travel selection, rather than a ranking of the world’s five best cities.

For Warsaw, the recognition nevertheless marks another example of international attention shifting towards the capital’s contemporary appeal.

Its reconstructed historic centre remains central to its identity, but the city’s story is no longer defined only by wartime destruction and recovery.

Visitors now encounter modern architecture, established cultural institutions, traditional neighbourhoods, a developing restaurant scene and public spaces that connect different periods of Polish history.

For a city rebuilt from devastating destruction within living memory, that transformation is particularly striking.

The BBC’s message is that Warsaw deserves attention not only for the remarkable history behind it, but also for the experience of discovering the city it has become.
