Poland has received an invitation to the 2027 G20 leaders’ summit in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Friday, 23 October, extending the country’s participation in meetings of the world’s major economies beyond the invitation it received from US President Donald Trump for 2026. Tusk said British Prime Minister Andy Burnham had confirmed that Poland would be invited to the Manchester summit, and that he intended to attend in person. Poland is seeking a permanent place in the G20, but the invitation does not make it a member.

The announcement came during Tusk’s visit to India, where he also said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pledged support for Poland’s continued presence in the international forum.

The Polish Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the news of the UK invitation and India’s support in its account of the visit, published on 23 October.

Speaking to reporters, Tusk said he had received an unambiguous invitation from the British prime minister. He said Poland would be invited and that he would be able to participate personally in next year’s summit.

🇵🇱 Poland has received a second consecutive G20 summit invitation.

After Donald Trump invited Poland to the US-hosted summit in December 2026, Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the UK's Andy Burnham has invited the country to attend the 2027 summit in Manchester.

The UK government’s published plans for the 2027 summit confirm that the meeting will take place in Manchester on 27 and 28 November 2027. The event will be held at Manchester Central Convention Centre, with other G20 meetings taking place elsewhere in Britain during the UK’s year-long presidency.

Second consecutive G20 invitation for Poland

The new invitation follows the decision by the United States, which holds the G20 presidency in 2026, to include Poland as a guest in its programme of meetings.

Poland has already taken part in ministerial-level G20 discussions this year. Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański has represented Warsaw in economic meetings, including a gathering of G20 trade ministers in the United States.

In an August statement on Poland’s participation, the Finance Ministry described the US invitation as an opportunity to influence discussions on growth, investment, trade, technology and economic resilience.

The 2026 leaders’ summit is scheduled for 14 and 15 December in Miami, Florida, with President Donald Trump as host.

Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki is expected to represent the country at that meeting. His office has linked the invitation to his earlier talks with Trump and said the president is seeking international support for a lasting Polish role in the G20.

In contrast, Tusk said he would personally attend the UK’s 2027 summit. These are invitations under two different host presidencies, and the anticipated representatives are different Polish officeholders.

The British government’s readout of a call between Burnham and Tusk on 21 October discussed Ukraine and UK-EU relations but did not mention a G20 invitation. The specific invitation was publicly confirmed by Tusk two days later, rather than through a separate British guest-list announcement.

India backs Poland’s bid for a lasting G20 role

During his visit to India, Tusk said he had also secured political support from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for Poland’s permanent presence in the forum.

He described Modi’s declaration as unexpected and said that India welcomed Polish participation in this year’s US-hosted meetings.

The prime minister’s remarks were reported from his 23 October press briefing. The extent and form of India’s future diplomatic support have not been set out in a detailed public agreement.

The development follows earlier American support. A joint Polish-American statement on strategic dialogue recorded US support for Poland joining the G20 as a permanent member.

Washington has also indicated that it intends to discuss the proposal with existing G20 members, although no agreement on admitting Poland has been announced.

Why Poland wants to join the G20

Created in 1999, the G20 brings together 19 national economies and two regional organisations: the European Union and the African Union.

According to figures cited by the UK government, its members account for approximately 85% of global economic output, 75% of international trade and two-thirds of the world’s population.

The forum provides a venue for major economies to discuss global growth, financial stability, trade, investment and other international issues. It does not function as a world government or have the authority to impose its decisions automatically on member states.

Poland argues that its economic growth and position as a major industrial and trading economy in the European Union warrant a more enduring role.

The Polish Finance Ministry describes the country as the EU’s sixth-largest economy and the largest in its part of Central and Eastern Europe. Domański has argued that Poland could contribute experience in economic transformation, digitalisation, energy security and industrial development.

Permanent participation would give Poland a more predictable seat at discussions affecting the global economy, rather than making its attendance dependent on invitations from each year’s host.

Does the invitation mean Poland is joining the G20?

No. Poland remains a guest participant, not a permanent G20 member. A presidency can invite additional countries to meetings, but that invitation does not by itself alter the forum’s membership.

Existing G20 members would need to agree to a change in the group’s composition. That is a more complicated diplomatic process than receiving an invitation to an individual summit.

The Polish president’s international policy office has acknowledged that a permanent seat requires the support of existing members, including countries whose relations with Warsaw are difficult.

Russia is among the G20 members, and Polish officials have repeatedly stressed that securing full membership cannot be taken for granted.

Poland has therefore pursued both immediate participation as a guest and the longer-term objective of becoming a permanent member.

What happens next?

The next significant event is the US-hosted G20 leaders’ summit in Miami on 14–15 December 2026, where Poland is expected to participate through President Nawrocki.

Britain then assumes the presidency in 2027 and is due to host the leaders in Manchester on 27–28 November.

For Poland, the British invitation provides continuity across two successive presidencies and another opportunity to present its case to the existing members.

Whether that leads to permanent membership will depend on further negotiations and agreement within the G20. No decision granting Poland a permanent seat has been announced.
