In a recent government meeting, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, underscored the critical importance of supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing full-scale war near Poland’s borders. He highlighted that the conflict, now in its second year, has disrupted normal life not only in Poland but across Europe, stressing that supporting Ukraine is tantamount to supporting Poland’s own security.
Kosiniak-Kamysz expressed concern over the normalization of the war in Ukraine, warning against becoming desensitized to the conflict. He argued that continuous support for Ukraine is essential for Poland’s security and called for the revitalization of the defense industry across Europe. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the industry cannot remain in a state of dormancy given the current circumstances.
Addressing the looming threat posed by Russia, Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that Poland must be ready for any scenario. This readiness stems from the ongoing full-scale war just beyond Poland’s borders, necessitating efforts to strengthen the country’s defense capabilities. He mentioned that these efforts are a continuation of the previous government’s initiatives, highlighting the importance of security matters being kept out of political disputes.
Kosiniak-Kamysz also touched on the upcoming Cabinet Council called by the President, scheduled for February 13, emphasizing the constitutional duty of the government to participate and provide relevant information. He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that security issues remain above political conflicts, viewing support for Ukraine as an investment in Poland’s own security and advocating for a collective decision by NATO and the European Union.
“That’s why I so often talk about stepping outside the political dispute over security issues and supporting Ukraine as one of the elements of taking care of our security. It’s not just aid for Ukraine, it’s not help for those who are fighting there (…) It’s actually an investment in our security. The more we invest there, the fewer consequences, often negative, we will face in NATO countries. It’s not only Poland’s decision, it should be a decision of the entire North Atlantic Alliance and the entire European Union” – argued Kosiniak-Kamysz
The Deputy Prime Minister discussed the need for comprehensive solutions, including constitutional changes, particularly regarding the Constitutional Tribunal. He criticized the previous government’s handling of the Lotos-Orlen merger, labeling it a privatization scandal, and expressed interest in restoring Lotos to full Polish ownership. Additionally, Kosiniak-Kamysz outlined plans for digitalizing the Polish school system and ensuring safe internet access for students, marking a departure from the previous government’s approach.
Kosiniak-Kamysz’s remarks reflect Poland’s firm stance on supporting Ukraine, preparing for potential threats, and prioritizing security over political disputes. His call for a united European defense industry response and the emphasis on digital education initiatives showcase Poland’s proactive approach to both external security challenges and internal development goals.
