Poland will be reclassified as a developed market by S&P Dow Jones Indices, a decision that marks another milestone for the country’s economy and the growing stature of the Warsaw capital market.

S&P DJI announced Thursday that it will move Poland from emerging-market to developed-market status as part of an index update scheduled for September 2027. The provider said Poland met the requirements for the higher classification, which is widely viewed by investors as a sign of market maturity, accessibility and institutional strength.

The decision puts Poland among a smaller group of countries recognized by the index provider as developed economies for stock-market benchmarking purposes. S&P DJI produces major global indexes, including the S&P 500, which tracks 500 leading companies traded on U.S. exchanges.

Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański welcomed the move, describing it as further evidence of Poland’s rising economic position.

“Poland is today the fastest-growing large economy in the EU,” Domański wrote Friday on X, formerly Twitter. He added that Poland would participate in a meeting of Group of 20 finance ministers and central bank governors in the United States the following week.

Poland is not a G20 member, but the United States invited it to take part as a guest during its 2026 presidency. The invitation followed Poland’s rise above $1 trillion in nominal gross domestic product, placing it close to the world’s 20 largest economies by that measure.

The S&P decision does not immediately change Poland’s standing in every major international index. MSCI, another prominent index provider, continues to classify Poland as an emerging market. Still, the upgrade adds to a series of favorable assessments from global benchmark firms and is likely to strengthen Poland’s image among international investors.

FTSE Russell elevated Poland from advanced emerging-market to developed-market status in September 2018. That decision made Poland the first country in Central and Eastern Europe to receive developed-market recognition from the provider.

The Warsaw Stock Exchange said the latest upgrade affirmed both the performance of the national economy and the evolution of the country’s financial system.

Warsaw Stock Exchange President Tomasz Bardziłowski called the designation “an important confirmation” of the domestic economy’s strength and the capital market’s maturity. He said further work remained but described the S&P decision as evidence that Poland was moving in the right direction.

S&P DJI began consulting in June on whether Poland should receive the new designation. Its final decision reflects the country’s sustained economic expansion since it joined the European Union in 2004, a period in which Warsaw has also emerged as one of Central and Eastern Europe’s most important financial centers.

Poland’s economy has expanded rapidly over the past two decades, supported by trade integration with the European Union, foreign investment and growth in domestic consumption. The country has increasingly sought to position Warsaw as a regional hub for finance, business and technology.

Eurostat data cited by TVP World showed Poland was the European Union’s sixth-largest economy in 2025, ranking ahead of Belgium and Sweden.[tvpworld]

Developed-market classifications can matter because they influence how global investment funds group countries and allocate money. Some funds track indexes that separate developed and emerging markets, meaning Poland’s new status could broaden its visibility among investors focused on advanced economies once the change takes effect.

The upgrade also carries symbolic weight. For a country that underwent a major economic transformation after the fall of communism and later accelerated its development through EU membership, the decision signals recognition of Poland’s stronger role in international financial markets.

Polish officials have presented the reclassification as proof that the country’s economy is gaining influence beyond Central Europe. Whether the shift translates into increased investment will depend on market conditions, company listings and continued efforts to deepen the Warsaw exchange.

For now, the announcement gives Poland another international endorsement as it seeks to build on its position as one of Europe’s fastest-growing major economies.[tvpworld]
