Poland defeated the USA 3-1 in the grand final of the 2023 Men’s Volleyball Nations League in Gdańsk, securing the gold medal. Japan’s team won the bronze after a thrilling 3-2 victory against Italy. This historic win marks Poland’s first-ever VNL gold, having previously triumphed in the 2012 FIVB World League.
The first set saw both teams locked in a closely contested battle (7-7, 12-12). However, as the set progressed, Poland began to build an advantage. Wilfredo Leon’s powerful serves, with speeds of 129 and 133 km/h, contributed to a 15-12 lead. Marcin Janusz added to the score with a precise serve (18-15). Though the Americans closed the gap (20-19), Poland had a set point at 24-21. Although the visitors defended well in two actions, a missed serve secured the set for Poland (25-23).
In the second set, after a balanced start, the Polish team took the lead (12-8). Midway through the set, the hosts extended their advantage to five points (16-11). However, two significant events changed the momentum in favor of the USA. Aaron Russell’s appearance on the court revitalized the American side, and Mateusz Bieniek’s injury forced him to leave the game. The US team quickly closed in (16-15), leading to an intense battle that lasted until the final action. Russell gave his team a set point (23-24), but a missed serve led to a deuce. A successful attack by David Smith and a decisive blocking point secured the set for the visitors (24-26).
In response, Coach Nikola Grbić made a substitution, replacing Wilfredo Leon with Tomasz Fornal. Poland had a strong start to the third set, building a comfortable lead (10-6). Throughout the middle part of the set, Polish players displayed a brilliant performance, effectively scoring points against their opponents (20-13). In the closing stages, Coach John Speraw introduced several reserve players, but they couldn’t change the outcome. Poland confidently secured the set, with the opponents making a crucial error (25-18).
With great momentum, the Polish team entered the fourth set (5-1, 10-4), maintaining their rhythm, with Łukasz Kaczmarek effectively attacking. Although the opponents won three consecutive actions (14-9), Poland maintained a clear advantage. Towards the end, Huber contributed with a point-winning serve (22-16), putting Poland just three steps away from gold. Kaczmarek made the first move, pushing the ball past the blocking opponents; shortly after, he served an ace, bringing the match point. The final point came with an impressive blocking move by the Polish players, securing victory (25-18).
