More than 11 years after its original release, Poland’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has set a new all-time player record on Steam, with the launch of a major free remaster drawing more than 120,000 people into the game simultaneously.
Steam tracking service SteamDB now records a peak of 120,975 concurrent players on 29 September, the day CD Projekt Red released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered.
That surpassed the game’s previous Steam record of 103,329 concurrent players, set in January 2020 during a resurgence in interest following the launch of Netflix’s The Witcher television series. The original game’s 2015 launch peak had been lower still, at just over 92,000 concurrent players.

The new figure is particularly unusual for a single-player game first released more than a decade ago.
Warsaw-based CD Projekt Red launched The Witcher 3 in May 2015. The role-playing game follows monster hunter Geralt of Rivia through a large open fantasy world as he searches for his adopted daughter Ciri.
The characters and setting draw on the Witcher universe created by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski, while the video-game series has become one of Poland’s most internationally successful cultural and entertainment exports.
The latest surge followed the release on Tuesday of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, which CD Projekt Red describes as a free upgrade for existing owners on qualifying platforms.
The remaster introduces upgraded visuals and performance, revised combat, new animations, changes to the game’s skill system, improved mod support and other technical and gameplay updates.
PC players can also use path tracing, while the release includes dedicated PlayStation 5 Pro support and a native Nintendo Switch 2 version.
The remaster is available through Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store and Battle.net on PC, as well as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
Existing owners on supported platforms can upgrade without buying the game again, while the package also gives players access to the two major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The official Witcher site confirmed that both expansions are now included for owners of the base game.
The scale of the renewed Steam activity adds another milestone to a game that was already one of the most commercially successful titles ever produced by a Polish studio.
CD Projekt reported earlier this year that The Witcher 3 had passed 65 million copies sold worldwide. In its H1 2026 results update, the company said total sales across the entire Witcher game series had exceeded 90 million copies by the end of the first half of 2026.
The company is now using the continuing popularity of the title as a bridge towards a much larger new phase for the franchise.
A third expansion for The Witcher 3, titled Songs of the Past, is scheduled for 2027 and will once again feature Geralt. CD Projekt Red is developing it together with Polish studio Fool’s Theory, whose team includes developers who previously worked on The Witcher 3.
The company is also developing The Witcher 4, which is intended to begin a new trilogy and shift the central role to Ciri. CD Projekt currently lists 2028 as its planned release window.
For now, however, the older game is demonstrating that its audience has not simply survived while those projects are developed.
The release of the remaster has instead pushed The Witcher 3 to a level of simultaneous Steam activity it never achieved during its original launch — more than a decade after Geralt first set out on the Path.
