Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk extended a message of solidarity to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after a highly tense meeting between Zelensky and the U.S. President Donald Trump ended in discord. The White House meeting, which was expected to solidify agreements on critical mineral resources, concluded prematurely without a signed deal due to a heated exchange between the two leaders.

“Dear Volodymyr Zelensky, dear Ukrainian friends, you are not alone,” Tusk wrote in a statement posted on social media, signaling Poland’s continued backing for Ukraine.

Clash Between Trump and Zelensky

Zelensky’s visit to the White House was initially aimed at securing firm commitments from the U.S. on military and economic aid. However, the meeting quickly turned contentious, with Trump reportedly accusing Zelensky of disrespect and warning that his approach could push the world closer to a third world war. Trump also implied that continued U.S. support for Ukraine was conditional on Zelensky making concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“You are playing with World War III,” Trump reportedly told the Ukrainian leader, demanding he reconsider negotiations with Moscow. The altercation ultimately derailed discussions on a U.S.-Ukraine deal concerning rare earth minerals, which are vital for global technology and defense industries.

European Leaders Rally Behind Ukraine

Tusk was not alone in voicing his support. Polish Speaker of Parliament Szymon Hołownia praised Ukraine’s resilience, stating, “Not three days, not three months, but three years of courage and determination. Respect to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine – we are with you.”

French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned Trump’s rhetoric, emphasizing that “Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the victim.” He stressed that Europe must continue supporting Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.

In Germany, key political figures, including CDU leader Friedrich Merz and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine. “Never should we confuse the aggressor with the victim in this terrible war,” Merz declared, while Baerbock assured that “Ukraine can count on Germany and Europe’s unwavering support.” Outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed similar sentiments, stating, “No one desires peace more than the Ukrainians themselves.”

Strong Reactions from European Officials

Italy’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani described the situation as one of “great tension,” urging calm and strategic decision-making. Meanwhile, Czech Deputy Prime Minister Vit Rakuszan argued that Zelensky had emerged as a “diplomatic winner,” having stood firm against pressure to compromise with Putin.

Leaders of the European Union, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, also stood by Ukraine. “Be fearless,” they urged Zelensky in a joint statement.

Russia Weighs In

The fallout from the meeting drew sharp reactions from Moscow. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now serving as the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, mocked Zelensky and praised Trump’s remarks. Medvedev claimed that Trump had finally told Zelensky the “truth to his face,” referring to the Ukrainian president as a “cocaine clown” and suggesting that the U.S. should cease military aid to Kyiv altogether.

Trump’s Position on Ukraine

Trump, who has previously expressed skepticism about U.S. military involvement in Ukraine, has hinted at his willingness to negotiate a settlement with Russia if re-elected. His sharp rebuke of Zelensky reflects his broader stance that European nations should bear greater responsibility for supporting Ukraine.

During the heated discussion, Zelensky reportedly reminded Trump that Putin had broken international agreements multiple times. Trump countered, saying, “Putin went through hell with me,” implying that he could handle Russia better than previous U.S. administrations.

Poland’s Role in Supporting Ukraine

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022. Under Tusk’s leadership, Warsaw has continued to push for sustained European and NATO support for Ukraine, providing military assistance and serving as a key transit hub for Western arms shipments.

As tensions rise in Washington over future U.S. commitments to Ukraine, European leaders, including Tusk, appear determined to fill any potential gaps left by a shifting American foreign policy. The events in the White House underscore the fragile state of Western unity in supporting Kyiv, just as Ukraine continues its fight for sovereignty.
