Poland is embarking on an ambitious project to construct the Central Port Communication (CPK), a mega airport that will serve as a fully integrated transportation hub. With an estimated cost of around 36 billion złoty, ($8.7 billion) the CPK aims to revolutionize travel experiences and enhance connectivity within the country. Let’s delve into the details of this groundbreaking initiative and explore the innovative features it promises to bring.

The CPK project has brought together a team of 250 talented designers and experts under the guidance of world-famous British architect Sir Norman Foster to turn the vision into reality. Foster + Partners, a renowned architectural firm known for their iconic structures worldwide, partnered with Buro Happold to create the architectural concept for the airport. Led by Grant Brooker, the CEO of Foster + Partners, the team aims to create an accessible and user-friendly terminal that will redefine the way people travel not only in Poland but also around the world.

Brooker emphasizes the importance of creating a building that enhances the travel experience. The design focuses on minimizing level changes and providing clear visual connections, making orientation within the terminal effortless. The spacious atrium, shaped like a diamond, will serve as the central hub, connecting the airport terminal, railway station, and bus station. This multifunctional space will welcome passengers from various modes of transportation, including planes, trains, and cars, offering a seamless transition between them.

A Multimodal Transport Hub

At the heart of the CPK project lies the concept of a fully integrated and efficient transportation system. The atrium, with its diamond shape, will serve as the central point of convergence for passengers arriving at the airport. Regardless of their mode of transport, be it a plane, train, or bus, all passengers will find themselves in this spacious area, creating a truly unified travel experience.

The CPK will not only be an airport but also a major railway hub, connecting Warsaw and Łódź. The railway station, designed to accommodate regional and long-distance trains, will feature six underground platforms with twelve tracks. Passengers will have convenient access to the bus station and the planned Airport City, a new urban development adjacent to the airport.

Atrium: The Heart of the Complex

The centerpiece of the CPK complex will be the atrium, a vast space that seamlessly connects the airport terminal, railway station, and bus station under one roof. Designed in the shape of a diamond, the atrium will serve as the entry point for most passengers, regardless of their mode of transport. Spanning approximately 400,000 square meters, the terminal will be spread over two levels and will feature traditional check-in counters as well as self-service kiosks equipped with biometric capabilities.

The railway station within the atrium will not only serve the airport but also function as a national transportation hub. With its six underground platforms and twelve tracks, the station will cater to both regional and long-distance trains. Passengers will be able to reach the station comfortably from the terminal, thanks to its convenient location within the atrium.

Enhancing Passenger Experience

The CPK project is driven by the ambition to create an airport that prioritizes the needs and comfort of passengers. The innovative design aims to improve the overall travel experience, making it more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The integration of various modes of transportation in one location allows for seamless transfers and efficient connections.

By minimizing level changes and providing clear visual cues, the terminal ensures easy orientation for passengers. The use of natural light and spacious design creates a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere, guiding travelers to their destinations within the airport. Additionally, the CPK’s central location and efficient transport links will enable passengers to reach their destinations across Poland quickly and conveniently.

Future Developments and Economic Impact

The CPK project represents a significant investment in Poland’s infrastructure and is expected to contribute to the country’s economic growth. In addition to the airport, the CPK will include extensive railway infrastructure, including a high-speed rail connection between Warsaw and Łódź. These developments will enhance connectivity and facilitate faster travel times between major Polish cities.

Moreover, the CPK project has already yielded positive financial results. In 2022, the company reported a profit of 28 million złoty, compared to a loss of 169 million złoty the previous year. This turnaround can be attributed, in part, to the acquisition of land from the National Property Fund and the National Agricultural Support Center. The land, offered as compensation to local residents affected by the project, has generated significant revenue for the CPK.

The employment opportunities provided by the CPK have also contributed to its positive impact on the economy. The company’s workforce has grown from 493 employees in 2021 to 638 in 2022, with professionals from various fields joining the team. This growth in human resources has resulted in increased spending on employee salaries, further stimulating economic activity.

Critics, however, point out the significant cost to the taxpayer of such a project. They say it will never reach its desired capacity, and therefore the vast amount of money invested in it from the central budget will never be recuperated.

Poland’s Central Port Communication project represents a significant leap forward in the country’s transportation infrastructure. With its innovative design, seamless integration of different modes of transport and a focus on enhancing the passenger experience, the CPK promises to transform travel within Poland and beyond. The ambitious project, led by Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, aims to create a landmark airport that reflects the spirit of Polish culture, craftsmanship, and technology. As the CPK progresses, it will not only boost economic growth but also position Poland as a key player in the global aviation industry.
