Young Pole completes 33,000-kilometre bicycle-and-kayak journey across the Americas

A young Polish traveller has completed an extraordinary expedition across the length of the Americas, covering around 33,000 kilometres over roughly three years with a bicycle as his main means of transport.

Kacper Opiela travelled from Alaska through North, Central and South America towards Patagonia in a journey that lasted about 1,100 days and took him through 18 countries. For most of the route he travelled by bicycle, carrying his belongings on a heavily loaded touring bike and moving forward under his own power through deserts, mountains, cities and remote stretches of road.

What made the expedition especially unusual was the way he handled one of the most difficult breaks in the Pan-American route.

At the Darién Gap — the dense, roadless region between Panama and Colombia where the highway system effectively stops — Opiela switched from bicycle to kayak. Polish reporting says he covered around 420 kilometres by water there and became the first Pole to complete that crossing by kayak.

The result is the sort of achievement that sounds almost improbable in a single sentence: one rider, one bicycle, two continents, roughly 33,000 kilometres and a kayak when the road finally disappeared.

A journey measured in years, not weeks

The expedition was not a polished sponsored stunt completed at speed.

Opiela’s journey stretched over years, and part of what makes it compelling is that it appears to have been built as much on persistence and improvisation as on endurance. According to his own accounts in Polish media, he financed sections of the trip by taking temporary jobs along the way and, at times, returning to Europe to work before heading back out again.

In one interview, he described working in a range of roles, including fruit picking in Canada, gardening jobs in the United States, restaurant work in Mexico, work on a coffee plantation in El Salvador, and seasonal employment in London. That practical stop-start rhythm helped make the trip financially possible.

It also gives the story a different tone from many long-distance adventure projects.

This was not simply a matter of setting off fully funded and riding until the continent ran out. It was a journey sustained by repeated effort: travelling, stopping, working, saving and continuing.

From Alaska to Patagonia

The sheer geographical scale is one reason the story has attracted attention in Poland.

The route linked some of the most dramatic and varied landscapes in the western hemisphere, beginning in Alaska and continuing through the Americas all the way south towards Patagonia. Even without the Darién crossing, that would already rank as a formidable undertaking for a solo traveller on a bicycle.

The Darién section, however, gave the journey its most distinctive chapter.

For overlanders moving through the Americas, the Darién Gap is notorious precisely because there is no conventional road route through it. It is a region more often discussed in terms of danger, jungle, swamps and logistical difficulty than as a setting for a kayak crossing by a Polish cyclist.

That is why the “first Pole” claim has featured so prominently in coverage of Opiela’s expedition. It adds a singular element to a journey that was already unusual.

Because that specific first-of-its-kind claim comes from Polish media reporting rather than an independently maintained international register, it is best treated as reported rather than absolutely certified. But even without it, the crossing remains one of the most striking elements of the expedition.

More than a physical challenge

Polish television and radio interviews have also highlighted something else: the expedition was not only about distance.

Opiela has spoken about the generosity of people he met on the way, the mental difficulty of long periods on the road, and the sense that travel itself had become central to how he wanted to live. In one interview, he said he felt most at home in movement, and that most of the time he genuinely enjoyed the life he had chosen on the road.

That helps explain why the story resonates beyond pure adventure.

There is, of course, the obvious appeal of the numbers: 33,000 kilometres, 18 countries, 1,100 days. But there is also something more human underneath them — a young Polish traveller building a continental-scale journey not from luxury or certainty, but from determination, odd jobs, improvisation and the willingness to keep going.

For Poland, it makes for exactly the kind of striking individual feat that travels well: a story of endurance, curiosity and stubborn follow-through, stretching from Alaska to Patagonia with a bicycle most of the way and a kayak where the road ran out.
