Alexandra Grant, a renowned American artist and long-time partner of actor Keanu Reeves, has unveiled a new exhibition at the Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature in Warsaw. The show, inspired by the works of Nobel laureate Wisława Szymborska, marks Grant’s fifth visit to Poland and her first exhibition in the country.

Grant, who lives and works between Los Angeles and Berlin, incorporates a diverse range of media in her artistic portfolio, including video, photography, sculpture, neon art, and paintings. Her latest exhibit in Warsaw showcases her fascination with Polish poetry and literature, particularly the work of Szymborska.

One of the central pieces in the exhibition is a neon installation featuring a quote that Grant reinterpreted from Szymborska’s poetry. The artist slightly altered the original words, which read, “Bez nas marzenia nie mogłyby istnieć” (“Without us, dreams could not exist”), to the phrase: “Bez nas marzenia by nie istniały” (“Without us, dreams would not exist”). Grant explained her choice during an interview, suggesting that the modification prompts people to rethink how they perceive the world and not take anything for granted.

A Personal Connection to Poland

Though this is Grant’s first time displaying her work in Poland, she revealed that her connection to the country runs deep. In an interview, she disclosed her Polish roots, stating that her great-grandfather came from Nowa Ruda in the Lower Silesia region. “I am practically one-eighth Polish,” she shared with enthusiasm, adding a personal layer to her visit and exhibition.

While Grant is influenced by her relationship with Reeves, she also draws heavily from literature, particularly poetry, which has become a central theme in her creative practice. She has explored various literary figures in her previous work, but this exhibition underscores her admiration for Szymborska’s poetic genius.

Expanding Her Global Reach

Grant’s visit to Warsaw is another step in her growing international presence. Known for her intellectual depth and innovative approach to art, she has garnered a global following, particularly for how she melds text with visual art. Her decision to focus on Szymborska, a beloved figure in Polish and global literature, resonates deeply with local audiences.

The exhibition includes a series of multimedia installations that invite visitors to explore themes of existence, perception, and the role of dreams in shaping reality. Grant’s decision to feature a Polish poet as the foundation for her work signifies her respect for the country’s rich literary heritage and reflects the universal appeal of Szymborska’s words.

A Future of Literary and Artistic Fusion

As Alexandra Grant continues to explore the intersections of text and art, her Warsaw exhibition marks a pivotal moment in her career, both personally and professionally. With her growing connection to Poland and its cultural legacy, this exhibition could be the beginning of more collaborations between the artist and the Polish literary community.
