Polish President Andrzej Duda announced Poland’s willingness to transfer its remaining MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine if NATO allies ensure security over Polish airspace. This offer marks another step in Poland’s continued support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia, although Duda emphasized that Poland’s defensive needs require a guarantee of replacement aircraft and interim protection from Western forces.

Speaking on Radio Zet, Duda clarified that any decision to transfer these jets depends on Western allies’ commitment to temporarily safeguard Poland’s skies and expedite the delivery of substitute jets for Polish defense forces. This strategy, he noted, balances Poland’s security interests with its dedication to assisting Ukraine in its defensive struggle. Duda also acknowledged concerns that Poland has already reached its limit in terms of the Soviet-era weaponry it can supply without compromising its own security.

“While we have provided extensive support, we’ve reached a point where additional transfers of post-Soviet equipment, particularly the few remaining MiG-29s, would require careful consideration,” Duda explained. “We acted quickly at the war’s outset, providing what was needed. But after two years, the circumstances have evolved, and our own security remains paramount.” The president added that Poland has already made substantial contributions that reflect the country’s commitment to supporting Ukraine while aligning with Poland’s defense strategy.

Balancing Military Support with Domestic Defense

In the early months of Russia’s invasion, Poland emerged as one of Ukraine’s staunchest military supporters, providing over 45 military aid packages valued at more than $4 billion. Alongside the initial transfers of T-72 and PT-91 tanks, Krab self-propelled artillery units, and Leopard 2 tanks, Poland also sent a portion of its MiG-29 fleet to support Ukraine’s air force. However, Duda indicated that Poland must prioritize its own defense capabilities moving forward.

Poland has recently invested in a series of defense contracts, primarily with South Korea, to modernize and strengthen its military forces. These contracts include around 1,000 K2 tanks, 600 K9 self-propelled artillery systems, 300 K239 artillery systems, and 48 FA-50 fighter jets. Duda noted that these new assets, financed to reinforce Poland’s security, would not be transferred to Ukraine. “A responsible politician cannot transfer such equipment,” he said, highlighting the importance of maintaining Poland’s own defense infrastructure in light of current geopolitical uncertainties.

NATO’s Role and the Importance of Ukrainian Sovereignty

As NATO’s easternmost member state, Poland plays a key role in the alliance’s strategy against Russian aggression. Duda emphasized that supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty aligns with Poland’s interests, as an independent Ukraine serves as a buffer against Russian influence. However, he also conveyed the necessity of allied support to ensure Poland’s airspace security during any potential transfer.

The proposal underscores Poland’s approach to navigating security responsibilities as both a frontline NATO member and a major supporter of Ukraine. While expressing pride in Poland’s contributions thus far, Duda reiterated that any future assistance must be approached with caution to maintain the balance between aiding Ukraine and upholding Poland’s national defense.

In concluding his remarks, Duda affirmed Poland’s commitment to Ukraine’s independence while stressing that continued support requires collective responsibility. “Ukraine’s fight is crucial not only for them but for the security of Poland and the whole region,” he said, appealing to NATO allies for sustained and strategic coordination.
