Poland has secured its fourth consecutive victory in the European Tree of the Year competition, with “The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills” taking the top spot. The announcement was made at a ceremony held at the European Parliament in Brussels, where the winning tree was recognized for its cultural significance and community impact.

The Heart of the Dalkowskie Hills, located in Poland, garnered an impressive almost 150,000 online votes, significantly outpacing its European competitors. A majestic fig tree in Portugal came in second with 43,000 votes, while a 400-year-old stone pine in Spain secured third place with 37,000 votes. Fifteen trees from across Europe competed for the prestigious title this year.

The winning tree stands 30 meters tall and boasts a trunk circumference of 4.5 meters. Its name is derived from its central location in the Dalkowskie Hills and the symbolic red color of its leaves, reminiscent of the heart. This tree serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting concerts, workshops, book readings, and religious services. According to local legend, dropping peanuts into a hole in the tree is believed to make wishes come true.

Poland’s dominance in the competition began in 2022 when a 400-year-old oak from Przybudki in the northeastern Białowieża Forest took the title. In 2023, an 180-year-old common oak nicknamed “Fabrykant” from Łódź won. Last year, a 200-year-old beech known as “The Heart of the Garden” in Wojsławice, southwestern Poland, claimed the award.
