Stargard’s innovative water monitoring system relies on eight mussels, each outfitted with a sensor and magnet attached to their shells. The system measures the opening and closing of the mussels’ shells, with sudden closures signaling the presence of contaminants, particularly chemical pollutants.
“This technology has been in place since 2006 and undergoes updates every three years. It effectively determines whether the water is of good or poor quality,” explained Dariusz Dziakowicz, head of water exploitation at Wody Miejskie Stargard.
Andrzej Olech, an electrician with the water utility, highlighted the mussels’ reliability in detecting threats such as chemical spills. “They detect contamination if someone pours chemicals into a well or if pollutants reach the water. Fortunately, we haven’t encountered such an incident yet, and we hope it stays that way,” Olech said.

The mussels are rotated regularly to maintain system efficiency, ensuring that Stargard’s water supply remains safe. The city sources its water from 21 wells, which undergo treatment and monitoring using this bio-monitoring technology.
Residents can feel confident in the safety of their tap water thanks to the joint efforts of water utility workers and the mussels. As Dziakowicz put it, “This system allows us to act swiftly if any contamination is detected, keeping our water safe for everyone.”
