In the shadow of the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe, Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, made a compelling declaration during the Trilateral Meeting of the Weimar Triangle, comprising Poland, Germany, and France. “We cannot allow Putin to win this war; our obligations to Ukraine must be fulfilled,” Sikorski stated, underscoring the critical juncture at which Europe finds itself.

The meeting, held amid rising tensions in Europe, was characterized by Sikorski as both dramatic and noble. “Once again, we find war in Europe, facing a dictator who presumes to decide who may or may not be a nation, challenging the sovereignty of borders in Europe,” Sikorski remarked. His words reflect the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for a unified response from European nations.

Sikorski highlighted the deceptive and demagogic strategies employed by Putin in an attempt to subjugate Ukraine and dismantle the unity of the EU and NATO. “It is imperative that Putin does not win this war. We must honor our commitments to Ukraine, from the Budapest Memorandum to recent declarations of ammunition and financial support, ensuring Ukraine’s future as a democratic, reforming European country,” he emphasized.

Countering Russian Aggression

The Polish Foreign Minister called for the full implementation of sanctions against Russia and resilience against Russian misinformation campaigns and cyber-attacks. “They’ve tried to influence elections in the UK, the US, and within our own election campaigns. We must be vigilant and enhance our cooperation to ensure such tactics no longer find success,” Sikorski added.

Sikorski underscored the importance of the Weimar Triangle as an effective instrument in preventing Putin from isolating Ukraine from the rest of Europe and breaking the EU’s unity. “The bloody dictator in Moscow knows his chances of success increase if he can separate Ukraine from Europe, if he can divide the European Union, if he can sever Europe from the United States. He will not succeed, and the Weimar Triangle will be an effective tool in preventing this,” Sikorski affirmed.

Reflecting on Donald Trump’s recent statements that questioned the commitment of certain NATO countries, Sikorski pointed out Poland’s defense spending exceeds 3% of its GDP, aligning with NATO’s financial obligations. “An alliance is not a contract with a security firm. Article 5 of the Washington Treaty was invoked for the first time after the attack on the United States on September 11. Poland did not send a bill to Washington for our support. Alliances also strengthen the United States,” Sikorski stated, advocating for a defensive union that complements the strategic harmony between NATO and the EU.

As Europe navigates through one of its most challenging periods, the statements made by Sikorski during the Weimar Triangle meeting serve as a stark reminder of the stakes involved. The unity and resilience of the EU and its allies are crucial in countering the threats posed by adversaries and ensuring the continent remains a beacon of democracy and freedom.
