A significant seismic event rattled the Rydułtowy mine in Rybnik on Thursday morning, triggering an ongoing rescue operation. The tremor, which registered a magnitude of 3.1, occurred at 8:16 AM local time, disrupting the work of 68 miners in the area.
The Polish Mining Group (PGG) spokesperson, Aleksandra Wysocka-Siembiga, reported that 15 miners were safely brought to the surface immediately following the tremor. Of these, 10 were transported to hospitals with stable conditions. The remaining miners are currently being evaluated for injuries. Helicopters from the Air Ambulance Service were dispatched to assist with the emergency response, and 10 rescue teams have been mobilized to the site.
“The shock was very strong and high-energy, occurring in seam 713 at a depth of 1,200 meters,” said Wysocka-Siembiga. “We are in the process of evacuating the crew and conducting the rescue operation, hoping for a positive outcome.”
Ongoing Rescue Efforts
As the rescue teams continue their efforts, a critical focus remains on assessing the risks of further collapses and fires, ensuring the safety of both the trapped miners and the rescue personnel. Zbigniew Rawicki, Director of the Department of Underground and Open-Pit Mining at the Higher Mining Office, explained that the tremor’s energy was comparable to a medium-sized earthquake, which severely damaged the mine’s underground infrastructure.
“We are continuously monitoring the conditions to ensure that rescue teams are operating as safely as possible,” Rawicki stated on Polsat News.
By noon, PGG confirmed that contact had been lost with two miners. Initial reports from the RMF24 portal indicated that communication with 12 miners was initially severed. The specific area of the mine where the tremor occurred has been shut down for safety reasons.
Community Impact and Safety Measures
Local authorities, including the police, are on site to manage the large crowds of concerned family members and ensure emergency services have clear access to the mine. “We received the accident report from the Rydułtowy mine, and a significant number of people have gathered because their families learned about the tremor,” said Małgorzata Koniarska, a senior officer from the Wodzisław Śląski police department. “Our job is to ensure the access routes for emergency services remain open.”
Despite the severe damage and the intense rescue efforts, there have been no reports of fatalities. The community remains on high alert as updates from the mine continue to emerge.
Background
The Rydułtowy mine has a long history of mining operations, often dealing with the inherent risks of underground work. This incident follows a similar tremor at the Bobrek-Piekary mine in Bytom, which resulted in one miner’s death. The recent events underscore the ongoing dangers faced by miners and the critical importance of robust safety measures in such high-risk environments.
As rescue teams work tirelessly to ensure the safety of the trapped miners, the entire nation watches with bated breath, hoping for a successful resolution to this harrowing incident.
