The Łódź University of Technology (Politechnika Łódzka) has been awarded a Gold Medal at the prestigious European Exhibition of Creativity and Innovation (EUROINVENT) 2024, held in Iasi, Romania. The accolade was given for the innovative project “Composite Material Based on PLA, Its Manufacturing Method, and Application,” patent number PCT/EP2024/052675.
The award-winning project is part of the “Sustainable Industrial Design of Textile Structures for Composite” initiative, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program. This achievement highlights the university’s commitment to sustainable development.
The patent’s authors are Dr. Eng. Paulina Byczkowska, Dr. Emil Saryusz-Wolski, and Dr. Hab. Eng. Marcin Barburski, Prof. PŁ, from the Łódź University of Technology, along with Prof. Nawar Kadi and Prof. Mikael Skrifvars from the University of Boras in Sweden.
The innovative project aims to reduce existing textile waste by integrating natural fibers into PLA. The research team is also exploring other natural fibers to optimize the PLA mixture and achieve desired properties for the final product. “This means such materials can be used for printing various items, including spare parts, packaging, and other products that need to be durable and environmentally friendly,” adds Prof. Barburski.
The 16th edition of EUROINVENT in 2024 showcased over 600 inventions and projects from 34 countries, emphasizing the global reach and impact of creative and innovative endeavors.
