Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), has made a strategic return to the government, exactly one year after his departure. This move has been welcomed by many right-wing voters and commentators and has raised several questions about the potential implications on Polish politics.
Kaczyński held the position of Deputy Prime Minister from October 2020 to June 2022. His role was significant in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, where he supervised the security committee. However, a year ago, Kaczyński announced his departure from the Council of Ministers.
Kaczyński’s return to the government marks a pivotal moment in Polish politics. He’s not only the leader of the ruling PiS (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość – Law and Justice) but now he will be the only Vice Premier, responsible for coordinating all departments, effectively becoming the de facto leader above the Prime Minister. Although on paper he will be under Prime Minister Morawiecki, in fact he will have full political control over him as the leader of the biggest party in the Polish parliament, Sejm.
The return of Kaczyński to the government has been perceived as a strategic move for the PiS, especially with the upcoming parliamentary elections. As the leader of PiS, Kaczyński is expected to coordinate the party’s efforts and ensure that it remains focused on its objectives.
A Shift in the Council of Ministers
Kaczyński’s return has triggered a shift in the Council of Ministers. Previously, the council had four Vice Premiers: Henryk Kowalczyk, Mariusz Błaszczak, Piotr Gliński, and Jacek Sasin. These individuals have now resigned from their Vice Premier roles but will continue to serve in their ministerial capacities.
As the only Vice Premier, Kaczyński’s role will be different from his previous tenure. He will now oversee all government operations, marking a significant change in the dynamics within the Council of Ministers.
His return is expected to strengthen the PiS as it prepares for the upcoming elections. Kaczyński’s leadership and coordination are perceived as key elements that will guide the party towards a successful election campaign.
Reactions to Kaczyński’s Return
The return of Kaczyński to the government has elicited mixed reactions. While some view it as a strategic move that will strengthen the PiS, others express concerns about the potential for consolidated power within the party and government.
With Kaczyński’s return, changes are expected in the PiS election campaign team. The changes are seen as a way to increase the party’s effectiveness in the upcoming elections. Additionally, the campaign team is expected to include representatives from the Republican Party and the Sovereign Poland Party.
The return of Jarosław Kaczyński to the government marks a crucial moment in Polish politics. As the leader of the PiS, Kaczyński’s leadership and coordination are expected to be pivotal in guiding the party to a successful election campaign. It remains to be seen how this move will shape the political landscape in Poland.
