The dramatic images, shared by Poland’s General Command of the Armed Forces, show Nowak, a major and medical doctor, as he makes his way through the water to provide critical care.
Heavy flooding has ravaged parts of southern and southwestern Poland in recent days, with numerous towns submerged. According to officials, the lives and health of those stranded in the hardest-hit areas remain a top priority. Rescue efforts have seen collaboration between the military, emergency services, and medical personnel, with Nowak’s mission symbolizing the urgency of the situation.
One of the images captures Major Nowak waist-deep in murky floodwaters, heading towards residents isolated by the rising waters. “Major Tomasz Nowak is ‘swimming’ to his patient. Other photos reveal the doctor providing medical assistance to an elderly person, one of the many vulnerable individuals left in critical condition by the floods.
As of Saturday, Jan Grabiec, a Polish government spokesperson, reported that 2.39 million people were residing in regions declared to be under a state of natural disaster. In total, 749 towns and villages have been impacted by the floods, but the most severe effects are being felt by around 57,000 residents who have been directly affected. The disaster has prompted the evacuation of 6,544 people from the worst-hit areas.
